Dear Parents and Students,
On behalf of our school, I warmly invite you to join us for our WWMS Watershed Celebration & 110th Anniversary on April 15th here on campus. We are incredibly excited to host this event, which is part of a full week dedicated to watershed stewardship and environmental sustainability.
The evening will begin at 5:30 PM with food, networking, and a meet-and-greet, followed by the formal program with guest speakers, and a celebration of our watershed. The event is $10 per person or $20 per family for regular admission at the door.
This event will also highlight the impactful work our students have been doing, including:
- Constructing vertical oyster gardens and oyster reef balls
- Learning how to test water quality and monitor ecosystem health
- Using aquaponic systems to model sustainable agriculture
- Exploring rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation
- Deploying VOGs (Vertical Oyster Gardens) from their backyard docks
- Working toward making Wilson Middle an Everglades Champion School
- Participating in a shoreline restoration project cleanup
In our mission to develop sustainable practices that lessen agriculture’s impact on the environment, students have been hands-on in demonstrating how aquaponics can be used to grow fish, vegetables, and native aquatic plants while benefiting local ecosystems. Our oyster projects further highlight how aquaculture species can both improve water quality and serve as a sustainable food source.
We have also explored the cultural heritage of our watershed, including Spanish Town Creek and Bayshore Blvd., while recognizing the need to restore missing components like oysters, seagrass, and mangroves in Hillsborough Bay. As part of our action plan, students have begun working with restaurants to recycle oyster shells and return them to the water.
We hope this event will be an inspiring evening filled with learning, celebration, and community engagement. And you might even hear a sustainability song or two from Mr. C!
This event is sponsored by Swamp2Gulf and Supported by the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
Looking forward to seeing you on April 15th!
Best regards,
Jerry John Comellas, MA, OPL, PM4SD
